White Willow is known botanically as Salix alba. This species of willow is native to Europe and western Asia. White willow bark powder has been used as a medicinal herbal substance to ease aches and pains and reduce fevers since at least the 5th century BC.
The active compound in white willow is known as salicin. The identification and isolation of salicin led to the development of acetylsalicylic acid acid, better known as aspirin. Aspirin and white willow bark supplements have similar properties in terms of usage and effects.
