Vitamin B-1 (a.k.a. thiamine) is one of the B-complex vitamins which also includes biotin, choline, folic acid, inositol, vitamin B-2, vitamin B-3, vitamin B-5, vitamin B-6 and vitamin B-12. A water soluble vitamin, thiamine is found in all plant-source and animal-source foods. Good sources of B-1 include whole grains, meat, vegetables, fruits and nuts.
Vitamin B-1 is necessary for proper function of the cardiovascular and nervous systems, and is also involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates.
A balanced, healthy diet usually provides amounts of vitamin B-1 adequate to stave off a deficiency. Deficiencies are possible, however, and most likely in cases of malabsorption, very low calorie diets, eating disorders, cirrhosis, alcoholism or immune system disorders.
In addition to being necessary for good health, thiamine has been shown to have other benefits such as improving cognitive performance, and to helping to speed exercise recovery.
Take vitamin B-1 with solid food for best absorption. Consult your physician before using B-1 supplements if you are currently taking any medications. Use as directed.
