Triphala (TRIFF-a la) is a compound used as part of traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine. Triphala is actually an equal blend of three Ayurvedic medicinal fruits, each of which is used also used independently; harada, amla, and behada. Triphala is generally used to cleanse and tone the bowel. Triphala also possesses antioxidant properties, protecting cells against the damaging effects of free radicals as do all antioxidants.
Unlike harsher stimulant laxatives such as cascara sagrada, Triphala has a mild effect on bowel function. It can be used to help restore normal and healthy elimination after a period of either constipation or loose bowel movements. Its naturally-occurring tannins are thought to account for Triphala's astringent properties, which help to retain moisture and tone the bowel wall.
Use Triphala products as directed. Triphala may be combined with other nutrients that promote healthy bowel function such as fiber, peppermint oil, and probiotics.
None noted. Triphala may be used on a short or long-term basis, however, any chronic pain or difficulty in elimination could signal a serious medical problem and requires evaluation by a physician.
