Chaste tree berry is also known as chaste berry or more commonly as vitex, derived from its botanical nameVitex agnus-castus. Chaste berry or vitex is native to Europe but has been widely cultivated elsewhere for use as a medicinal herb.
Vitex' long history of use as a medicinal herb is most closely associated with the male and female reproductive systems, where it is considered to have both tonifying (strengthening) and regulating effects.
Vitex has been also used to promote libido in both sexes and is a commonly included in many sexual health formulas. Researched uses for chaste berry include support for PMS-symptoms1 and menopause.2 Flavonoid glycosides are among the probable active ingredients in chaste berry. Research has shown that extracts of these compounds affect hormone levels.3
Check with your doctor if you have questions about your hormone levels, or whether hormone levels are related to any health problem you may be experiencing.
The most common side-effects are nausea, headache, GI disturbances, menstrual disorders, acne, itching and rash.
