Black Cohosh, or Cimicifuga racemosa, is a herb often used by women as part of an alternative approach to standard artificial hormone replacement therapy. It is also commonly recommended by naturopaths to help ease the discomfort of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
There is inconsistent evidence to support for the effective and safe use of Black Cohosh by menopausal women or by women experiencing PMS.1 Black cohosh may improve physical and emotional comfort during those transitional times. Black cohosh is often combined with other menopause/PMS-oriented products like progesterone cream, red clover, soy isoflavones and evening primrose oil.
Formulations vary. Use the manufacturer’s suggested dosage.Black Cohosh is available in fresh/dried root, liquid, capsule and tablet form.
Stomach or intestinal discomfort sometimes occurs in sensitive individuals. Not for use by pregnant/breastfeeding women. It is generally recommended that Black Cohosh not be taken for a period greater than 6 months, except under medical supervision. Consult your physician before beginning the use of this and any other dietary supplement.
