Bilberry, also known as European Blueberry, is a fruit-bearing shrub in the same family as blueberries. Just like blueberries, bilberries are a good source of antioxidants such anthocyanoside flavonoids, and are used as dietary supplements primarily for this reason.
Bilberry is thought to benefit vision and has been used as a folk remedy for improving night vision in particular. Although the eyes are known to be sensitive to free-radical damage, and would theoretically benefit from antioxidants, evidence for claims that bilberry improves vision are inconclusive.1
Use bilberry supplements as directed. Bilberry has very low toxicity and may be taken with other eye-support nutrients; lutein, fish oil, vitamin A and vitamin C.
